SolarAid is an international charity combating poverty and climate change. Our social enterprise, SunnyMoney, creates supply and demand for portable solar lights in rural, sparsely populated regions in east Africa - with the overarching aim of eradicating the kerosene lamp from Africa, by 2020.
To date, SunnyMoney has sold over 1.8 million pico-solar lights in sub-Saharan Africa, reaching an estimated 10 million+ people with clean, safe, affordable light.
At the forefront of innovation, SunnyMoney is widely credited with catalysing Africa's leading solar market - Tanzania - having sold lights to 16% of the nation's off-grid population in under four years. In 2016, SunnyMoney is the first organisation to roll out, nationwide, pay-as-you-go pico-solar products in Malawi.
SolarAid’s accolades include winning the Google Global Impact Award and Ashden Awards in 2013, and being a finalist in the first UN-DESA Powering the Future We Want grant 2015, as well as being a runner up for the prestigious Zayed Future Energy Award twice in a row.
