E-waste Festival

The E-waste Festival, held from 16 -18 July in Nairobi, will bring the industry together to create new ideas, partnerships and projects. We will cover a broad range of e-waste topics including take-back, logistics, recycling and policy. The three-day event will include expert presentations, participatory exercises and a site visit to a recycler. Members of GOGLA’s e-waste Working Group, KeREA and GlobalLEAP Solar E-waste Challenge winners are invited; spaces are limited so sign-up early. There is no attendance fee, though participants are expected to cover their own costs.

  • Day 1 (July 16): E-waste workshop.

The morning will focus on arguably the main barrier to improved e-waste management – product take-back from consumer at end-of-life. We will discuss the various take-back channels and mechanisms and explore ways to address the challenges. In the afternoon we will look at other key considerations for off-grid solar companies - storage, handling and transport.

  • Day 2 (July 17): Kenya e-waste policy engagement & Global LEAP challenge kick-off.

For the first part of the day, we will discuss the industry response to the upcoming e-waste bill in Kenya. We will review the industry position and discuss the advocacy strategy and implications of the bill for companies. It is of primary relevance to Kenyan operators (and companies that transport waste into Kenya), and interesting to other companies as a likely blueprint for the region.

For the second half of the day, successful applicants to the Global LEAP Solar E-waste Challenge are invited to a kick-off meeting to share and learn about projects and the fund with other winners.

  • Day 3 (July 18): Visit a recycling facility.

We will visit a recycling facility that is dealing with off-grid solar waste in Nairobi. We will tour their facilities and meet to discuss how they set up service agreements with e-waste producers and the main challenges they see in the e-waste ecosystem and how they deal with them.

  • Networking & social

The agenda will include ample time for networking and an evening social.

Note, the venue will be selected shortly, and the agenda may evolve as we develop plans. If you have any questions or would like to participate, please get in touch with Juliana Martínez (j.martinez@gogla.org) or Drew Corbyn (d.corbyn@gogla.org).

You can register for the event here.

This event is part of the GOGLA e-waste toolkit, kindly funded by Swedfund.  The event is being coordinated with CLASP, CDC and KeREA.
