MIT D-Lab - Energy Assessment Toolkit

MIT D-Lab works with people around the world to develop and advance collaborative approaches and practical solutions to global poverty challenges. The program’s mission is pursued through interdisciplinary courses, research in collaboration with global partners, technology development, and community initiatives — all of which emphasize experiential learning, real-world projects, community-led development, and scalability. D-Lab research including needs assessment, market research, product evaluations, and sector-specific applied research, cuts across all programs. D-Lab research groups, initiatives and resources include Off-Grid Energy.

The Off-Grid Energy Group focuses on providing organizations based in off-grid regions with the information and resources to design and implement programs that increase energy access in their communities. D-Lab's process centers around the D-Lab Off-Grid Energy Roadmap, which consists of the following steps:

  • Assessment of energy needs and market opportunities;
  • Identification of technologies and business models;
  • Implementation of programs to increase energy access.

MIT D-Lab's process centers around the D-Lab Off-Grid Energy Roadmap, which consists of the following steps:

  1. Assessment of energy needs and market opportunities;
  2. Identification of technologies and business models;
  3. Implementation of programs to increase energy access.

To help guide local organizations through this roadmap, we are developing publicly available resources, convening stakeholders, and working directly with local organizations to design and implement programs that increase access to renewable energy solutions, such as efficient cookstoves, solar lighting, water pumps, and mechanical devices for increased productivity

Technical or other assistance

Understanding the energy needs and market opportunities in the specific off-grid community or region is the first step in D-Lab's Off-Grid Energy Roadmap. D-Lab has developed the Energy Assessment Toolkit to guide local organizations through the process of gathering the information needed to make informed decisions about what technologies and business models are best suited to meet the specific needs in their community through market based initiatives. The toolkit is designed to be modular so that organization conducting the assessment can determine the scope and scale of the assessment, and consists of the following threes type of documents:

  1. Data Collection Tools;
  2. Data Analysis and Visualization Tools;
  3. Training and Supporting Documents.
