M-Kopa Solar was announced the winner of the 2015 Zayed Future Energy Prize in the SME category at the opening ceremony of the annual Abu Dhabi Sustainabiliy Week, on 19th of January. M-Kopa is the first Sub-Saharan headquartered company to win the Zayed Prize. The winner of the Zayed Prize also receives a financial award of US$ 1.5 million. M-Kopa announced that it will use the funds to launch a training and development program in Nairobi - M-Kopa University - to provide high quality technical and business skills training to employees, sales agents and partners. About the Zayed Future Energy Prize: The Zayed Future Energy Prize recognizes and rewards innovative solutions aimed at creating new, sustainable energy future. The prize is managed by Masdar in Abu Dhabi and is awarded annually in 5 categories: A Large Corporation, A Small and Medium Enterprise, A Non-Governmental Organization, a Lifetime Achievement and Global High schools (up to 5 High Schools from 5 different regions). With M-Kopa winning the prize in 2015, in the SME category, SolarAid being a finalist in the NGO category for the same year, and Fraunhofer and d.light being awarded the prize in 2014 and 2013, respectively; off-grid solar energy receives clear recognition for its innovative approach towards creating a sustainable energy future for the world's energy impoverished.
