Freetown, May 12, 2016 —Power for All, a collective voice for businesses and civil society organizations focused on “beyond-the-grid” renewable energy solutions, launched its national campaign last week at an event in Freetown.
In Sierra Leone, only 98% percent of the rural population is un-electrified and the country has some of the most expensive fuel costs on the continent. To address this issue, the President Ernest Bai Koroma launched an Energy Revolution initiative on May 10. In support of this initiative, the Power for All campaign will bring together national and international private businesses and civil society organizations to provide a unified voice for the sector and lay the foundations for a strong, sustainable off-grid market.
In his speech at the Energy Revolution event the President stressed the “key role” of the private sector in achieving energy access goals. At the Power for All launch, Mr. Serry-Kamal, the Renewable Energy Advisor to the President, reiterated the importance of working with private enterprises as well as civil society organizations to achieve electrification targets.
Mr. Serry-Kamal said: “The Sierra Leone Energy Revolution goals, compact and tax and duty exemptions on quality solar products show our firm commitment to supporting the growth of the off-grid renewables sector. We are delighted by the launch of Power for All, and support the campaign’s important focus on bringing private businesses and civil society organizations together with investors, development financing institutions, ministries and community leaders to rapidly expand energy access."
The Power for All Campaign launch was attended by representatives from the newly formed Renewable Energy Association of Sierra Leone (REASL), private sector enterprises, government officials, donor community and civil society organizations committed to supporting the growth of the decentralized renewables market.
Power for All Sierra Campaign Manager Ami Dumbuya said: “The involvement of the private sector and civil society groups in Sierra Leone’s Energy Revolution is fundamental to its success. I would like to thank all of the dedicated organizations and institutions who have joined the Power for All campaign. By working together we can ensure the rapid growth of the decentralized energy market and seize the opportunity to bring modern energy to all by 2025.”
During the event several organizations and key individuals also signed the Power for All declaration--a commitment to take action on energy access--including Nations Solar, Easy Solar, RCD Solar, BBOXX SL LTD, REASL and Energy Ministry officials.
