The Launch of the Global Off-Grid Lighting Association (GOGLA) at the International Off-Grid Lighting Conference and Trade Fair in Dakar, Senegal

Dakar, 14 November 2012 - The Global Off-Grid Lighting Association made its first appearance at the International Off-Grid Lighting Conference and Trade Fair in Dakar, Senegal from 13-15 November 2012. It was organized to facilitate partnerships and business ventures between manufacturers, distributors, importers, service providers, and financiers in Africa, India, and the rest of the world. It also served to showcase the latest advances in off-grid lighting products and recent technological advances. The Launch of the Global Off-Grid Lighting Association“The off-grid business is by no means easy to navigate. There are many issues that need to be addressed such as; unreliable distribution channels, rapidly changing legislation, absence of maintenance services, the lack of collection and recycling systems for spent products and, in many cases, presence of low quality products, which create unfulfilled expectations and disappointment on the part of end users. Therefore, the off-grid industry needs an industry association which will find solutions and address barriers faced by businesses in this market,” said, Dr. Harald Schützeichel, President of GOGLA.  “GOGLA invites other companies to join the association to move beyond an altruistic business model to provide off-grid solutions that assist people while realizing the advantage of this important emerging market sector.” The Global Off-Grid Lighting Association (GOGLA) was founded in June 2012 as an organization after The World Bank/ IFC Lighting Africa initiative agreed to provide a sustainable exit strategy for its activities. The association was launched to ensure that the off-grid industry is able to continue the development of a free market by reducing market barriers and promoting quality goods to people in inadequately electrified countries. It is a neutral, independent, not-for-profit association created to advance off-grid solutions that benefit society and businesses in developing and emerging markets. The association is international in scope and represents those stakeholders at the base of the off-grid market pyramid worldwide. GOGLA’s Board of Directors consists of large global off-grid products companies, as well as the new entrepreneurial ventures, startups and NGOs. GOGLA will work as a lean organization with its members forming the nucleus and participating in efficient working groups. GOGLA aims to become the voice of the industry for all companies and market participants who are involved in off-grid market by:

  • positioning off-grid technologies outside the philanthropic arena as a fully recognized industry in an important and growing market,
  • working with small and medium enterprises in developing and emerging countries to reduce barriers and increase business opportunities,
  • co-operating with legislative bodies to develop directives and regulations that are relevant to the industry on a national, regional and global level,
  • providing a platform for industry communications and information sharing to enable equal access to opportunities.

“It is as a result of the industry being afraid of claiming this unknown market, that today a slow but steady rethinking has started. This is based on the fact that a few courageous entrepreneurs have realized the potential of this huge, untapped market” said Wolfgang Gregor, GOGLA Secretary General.
